DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK OF ART: IMMORTALITY
Death, that physical cessation of human existence on earth, but the echo of man’s life, through his experience and journey, still resonates in the abyss of the living.

Incontestable art collector and African businessman, SINDIKA DOKOLO’s life revolved around his passion for beauty, his ardour for wonder, and his devotion to African art. And on a certain day, October 29, 2020, this worthy son of the country will go underwater to join his ancestors.

A man does not die, but lives on through his life, his struggle and his ideals. It is in this spirit of gratitude that Congolese ceramic artist BUL’S 21, who lives and works in Kinshasa, pays tribute to this giant patron and collector of African art, with his work entitled :<< IMMORTALITÉ . A work created between 2021 and 2022 (a year of study and realization), in glazed terracotta, in water inside a glass on wood, measuring 71x18x18cm.

Several elements are interrelated in this unique work, which is part of an innovative trend in submerged ceramics (Subaquatique), pioneered by artist BUL’S in Africa and even in the contemporary art world.

IMMORTALITY, a way for the artist to perpetuate the SINDIKA struggle, hence the presence of a small ancestral statuette in the work. IMMORTALITY, because for the artist, SINDIKA DOKOLO is still alive through his journey, hence the symbolism of the air bubbles coming out of his character’s mouth.

May this desire to do art differently find a favourable echo with spectators.
